Sleep Well, World!
It was a
cold February evening. Handan realized that her children were engrossed in an
animated movie. The toys were scattered on the floor, the popcorn eaten with
the movie spilled on the carpet when she looked around. She got up from couch
and pour another cup of tea to her
husband. Suddenly the reminding of bedtime phone alarm started ringing. “Come
on, it's time for bed, don't forget to brush your teeth!” their father said.
The children had completed their daily routine sleep preparations and had gone
to bed.
Their sleep
problems had not been solved for a long time. “I can't sleep, mommy!” they
cried every night. Whereas in another part of the world many oppressed children
were sleeping in the mud. What were we doing to our children? What was missing?
Handan's eyes filled with tears as she thought about all this and she felt
ashamed for every scene she witnessed. Every time she couldn't find an answer,
she remembered what the elders said: “Children grow up by sleeping.” What is
happening to our children, what are they missing?' she sighed.
Human beings
think that they will be happy when they have everything at their disposal or
when they provide everything for their loved ones. However, people who have
access to nothing are more capable of meeting their basic needs. Just like the
children who do not have a bed to sleep in the land of Qudus, but who do not
give up their sweet sleep even in the mud. Handan thought that once she found
the difference between her children and those tired children, she would solve
her problem. Indeed, “tired” children slept, didn't they? Whether it was mud or
stone, they would stay asleep on it.
As people of
this era, we did not tire our children. We didn't let them catch the pleasure
hidden behind tiredness. We kept them busy with the pleasures of the moment. We
provided such comfort that we even stole their greatest need, sleep, from them.
We overlooked the fact that those who were really tired would sleep. We did
this at a time when we thought we were the most awake.
Sleep well
to all of us...
Among billions of people, what
importance can ‘one’ person have?
Ask that ‘one’ person for the
answer!
